In an effort to lessen the number of trips to the grocery store and limit exposure to large groups, many consumers have opted to buy online—and in bulk. This change has forced retailers to shift their shopping experience to a contactless model, offering curbside pickup and additional hours to accommodate those who are most vulnerable during this pandemic. In an effort to maintain the safety of associates and customers, we’ve outlined how the biggest retailers are implementing new safety measures and curbside pickup services.
As a disclaimer, we’d like to clarify that these services may vary state to state and location to location. Not all times and services below are guaranteed and we encourage shoppers in need of curbside assistance to always call their preferred location in advance.
Walmart offers free curbside grocery pickup on all orders over $35. Orders can be made on Walmart's website or through their grocery app. Once selections have been made, you can choose a one-hour time slot—between the hours of 8 AM and 8 PM—to pick up your order. Orders placed before 3 PM are eligible for same-day pickup but not guaranteed due to high demand. Once your order is made, a confirmation email will provide details on when and where to pick up your items. Pickups can be made in the parking lot of the designated pickup location—just call the number provided in your confirmation email when you arrive.
Similar to most retailers, Walmart has implemented health and safety protocols by supplying all associates with masks and gloves and encouraging social distancing by operating at approximately 20-percent store capacity. In addition to their special senior shopping hour every Tuesday (Walmart opens one hour earlier for seniors only), the retailer is also extending their pickup services to first responders, those with disabilities, and high-risk individuals (as well as seniors) from 7 AM to 8 AM every morning. Due to high demand, not all Walmart stores are able to accommodate these new protocols, so call your store ahead of time for more information.
Some Home Depot locations are now offering free curbside pickup for online orders. At stores that participate, customers can pick up online orders until 6 PM each day. To use this service, simply place your order online and choose the “Store Pickup” option. Once your order is processed, you'll receive a confirmation email or text message that your order is ready for pickup at the designated Curbside Pickup location you selected. Most orders will be ready within a few hours, but allow extra time for larger orders. When you arrive, call the number included in your confirmation email or text message and request “Curbside Pickup.” Have a picture ID ready for confirmation, too.
Home Depot has taken several safety measures to ensure the safety of their customers and employees during this time. All employees have been provided non-medical face masks and gloves as well as thermometers for routine health checks. Stores close early—at 6 PM—to allow for thorough cleaning protocols and restocking. The number of customers per store are also being limited and major promotions have been canceled to avoid heavy foot traffic. Social distancing practices are in place using signage and floor markings as well as plexiglass shields.
Drive Up is Target’s free, contactless curbside pickup service which is available at select stores and pending product availability. Items available for Drive Up include cleaning products, baby care items, electronics, and non-perishable goods like shelf-stable foods. To use Drive Up, select an item you wish to purchase in the Target app, and if it's available for Drive Up, you'll see that indicated under the “Pick it up” option. Once you complete your order, an email confirmation will be sent when it’s ready for pickup. When you are ready to pick it up, select “on my way” under the “Discover” tab. Once you arrive, select “I’m here” and a Target team member will bring your items to you and scan your barcode to confirm your order.
Beyond the brand's Drive Up option, Target stores are also enhancing the safety of their stores and distribution centers by providing masks and gloves to all team members and implementing rigorous cleaning and social distancing measures. Team members abide by guidance from the CDC and stores are providing employees with thermometers so they can perform at-home checks prior to coming to work. Target stores are monitoring occupancy and metering traffic to enhance space per person and they're offering dedicated time slots for vulnerable shoppers. They have increased staff to accommodate contactless Drive Up service for online purchasers as well.
Lowe’s' Buy Online Pick Up In Store service allows you to make a purchase on Lowes.com or the Lowe’s mobile app and pick up your items at the store either by going to the service desk or having them delivered curbside. Not all items are eligible for in-store pickup, but those with a "Pickup" option can be added to your cart as such. Once your order is processed, a pickup notification email will alert you that your order is ready (Lowe’s emphasizes not to arrive until you receive this email). Park in a designated pickup parking spot and call the store for curbside delivery (have your ID ready) or follow the bright blue signs to the customer service desk to pick up your purchase. Not all locations offer this service, so we would advise calling ahead of making your purchase.
In an effort to implement further health and safety precautions, Lowe’s will temporarily close at 7 PM for cleaning services and restocking. Social Distancing Store Ambassadors are individuals dedicated to monitoring responsible customer flow using an app that will limit foot traffic and in-store customers based on CDC guidelines.
Almost all Best Buy retailers offer contactless curbside pickup and the company claims orders can be fulfilled and ready for pickup within one hour of purchase. All in-stock items are available for pickup. To request curbside delivery, customers can select “Use Curbside Pickup” when they complete their order online or through the Best Buy app. A confirmation email provides further instructions on where to park and how to contact the store when you arrive (note: this will vary by location). Be sure to have your photo ID and the credit card you used for the order ready. Simply pop your trunk and wait for an associate to deliver your order.
Since March 22, Best Buy has implemented a curbside pickup-only shopping model across all of its stores. At-home installations have been temporarily suspended and in-home deliveries are currently limited to the doorstep (subject to change in May). On April 29, Best Buy also announced that starting in May, 200 stores nationwide will allow customers to schedule in-store consultations on a limited basis.
Costco offers same-day grocery delivery through InstaCart as well as curbside home delivery for non-food purchases. Curbside home delivery is available for members once an order is placed; a delivery driver will contact members to schedule a drop-off appointment within a four-hour window between 8 AM and 5 PM Monday through Friday. Items will be taken off the truck by a driver and placed at the end of the driveway (in-home appliance installations have been suspended for the time being). A signature is required for all deliveries.
In addition to their new at-home delivery service, Costco warehouses have cut their hours and limited store entrances to two members per membership in an effort to limit the amount of people shopping at any given time. They also offer special hours for members 60 years and older and those with disabilities. Special hours are three times per week—Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8 AM to 9 AM. Due to panic buying, Costco is also placing limits on in-demand items like toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, bottled water, and rice.
Bed Bath & Beyond
All Bed Bath & Beyond stores are closed but the company is offering buy-online, pick up in-store services as well as contactless curbside pickup for eligible items at select locations. Within two hours of your purchase, items can be picked up in-store with your proof of purchase “Ready For Pickup” email confirmation. Purchases can also be held for up to two days. For curbside pickup, items can be purchased ahead of time and brought out to your car upon arrival. Once you arrive at the store, show your confirmation email and check out with form of payment.
Due to COVID-19, all Bed Bath & Beyond stores are closed for in-store shopping but in addition to curbside pick up and in-store pickup, they've also extended their return policy to allow for returns up to 240 days from the date of purchase.
In addition to Sam’s Club's pickup service, which allows its members to make purchases from their inventory and pick up at a preferred location, Sam’s is also offering free curbside pickup services for seniors, at-risk members with compromised immune systems, and those with disabilities. Members simply drive to a designated parking location and place their order from their car via a Sam’s Club associate. This associate will then do the shopping for them and deliver the order to their car using Scan & Go checkout.
Sam’s has shifted operating hours to 9AM through 8PM Monday through Saturday and on Sundays, they open at 10AM and close at 6PM to allow proper cleaning and restocking of their warehouses. Early shopping hours for seniors are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7AM to 9AM. The special hours also include their pharmacies and optical centers.
