Rugs USA Tuscan Dotted Diamond Trellis Nursery Rug
We purchased the Rugs USA Tuscan Dotted Diamond Trellis Nursery Rug so our expert reviewer could put it to the test in her baby's nursery. Keep reading for our full product review.
Welcoming a new baby into the world is a very exciting time. One of the most fun ways to prepare for baby is to design a trendy yet functional nursery. Nurseries can be as basic as a crib, storage, and rocking chair, but they can also be an elaborate oasis of calm and tranquility. One of the best ways to tie your look together is with a nursery area rug. We tested Rugs USA’s Tuscan Dotted Diamond Trellis Nursery Rug—which is available in a handful of colors from light pink and baby blue to ivory and light gray—to see if it was fit for our new baby girl’s room. Material: Durable but definitely not soft
The Dotted Diamond Trellis Rug is made from 100 percent wool which is heavy enough to hold up to the wear and tear of busy kids. While we love the rug’s trendy aesthetic, its durable, hand-woven construction is one of our favorite aspects of the design. Between learning to crawl, spilling sippy cups, wrestling with siblings, and being a playmat for all sorts of toys, nursery rugs see a lot of use so we’re excited to have one that’s up for the challenge.
We tried the rug out in ivory and found it wasn’t very plush or even soft, so we used a blanket or baby bouncer anytime our 2 month old was on the rug. If you’re looking for a rug your little one can roll around and play on, you’ll likely be disappointed with the rougher texture of Rugs USA’s offering. That said, we prefer durability to softness as we’d rather our rug be in it for the long haul rather than briefly suitable to sensitive skin.

The rug’s backing is quite heavy. It’s so substantial, in fact, that it took a few days for the corners of the rug to uncurl after we’d unrolled it from its packaging. To speed up the flattening process, we placed heavy books in all four corners and it took roughly a week to fully relax.
If you plan to use this rug on hardwood or tile floors, a rug pad would help prevent slipping and excess wear. We used it in a carpeted room to provide more durability and texture, so we went without one.
Design: Modern and trendy
Rugs USA’s Trellis Nursery Rug comes in five color options: baby blue, baby pink, light gray, ivory, and light pink. We chose ivory as it worked well with our decor and was neutral enough to be used in our boys’ room or our new daughter’s room. The color was exactly as we expected and we especially liked how the black dotted diamonds popped against the ivory. (The other color options feature white diamonds as opposed to black; this makes the pattern a little more subtle.) Our three year old enjoyed driving his cars along the “road” of the rug’s pattern.

We went with the 5’ x 8’ size as we have an average-sized nursery. We wanted a little bit of the rug to go beneath our son’s crib so he wouldn’t be able to pull it up as easily while playing. If you have a particularly large room, you may want to opt for the 6’ x 9’ or 7’ 6” x 9’ 6” size.
Care: Vacuum early and often
When we first unrolled the rug in our nursery, we found that it shed slightly. This was especially noticeable when we wore dark pants and sat on the rug with our children. We vacuumed it thoroughly after we first rolled it out and again a few days later. After four times running the vacuum over the rug, we noticed much less shedding.
Since it’s so tightly woven, blotting up spilled snacks and drinks is easy.
Luckily, the wool is easy to spot clean with a natural cleaner. Since it’s so tightly woven, blotting up spilled snacks and drinks is easy. Most rug cleaners recommend you try them out on a corner first, but we had no issue using a wool-specific formula.
Price: Great price for the quality
The Trellis Nursery Rug is very reasonably priced—especially considering its size, natural wool construction, and the fact that it’s hand-tufted. When searching for an area rug suitable for our nursery, we were prepared to pay upwards of $300, but Rugs USA’s option retails for roughly $220. The online retailer frequently has sales, too, so you can often find it for as little as $115.
Rugs USA Ivory Wool Moroccan Shag Area Rug vs. Rugs USA Tuscan Dotted Diamond Trellis Nursery Rug
When considering what kind of rug we wanted in our kids’ nursery, we debated between finding something that would hold up to their rough and tumble play and something that would be softer on their delicate skin. If you’re looking for the latter, the Ivory Wool Moroccan Shag Area Rug, also from Rugs USA, is a shag option that’s plusher than most wool rugs. It also comes in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes (square, circle, rectangle), although there are not blue or pink options. At $280 for a 5’ x 7’, it is slightly more expensive than the Tuscan Dotted Diamond Trellis Rug, but you can also frequently find it on sale. Depending how much wear it sees, though, you may have to replace it earlier than a short-pile wool option.
Worth the purchase.
When buying items for our kids, we always want to find products that will hold up for a long time and be suitable for both our boys and little girl. This rug’s durable construction, variety of color options, and modern design ticks off both boxes and makes it an ideal option for most nurseries.
