Using Scent in Interior Design
When you think about it, it makes sense that, as fans, lovers and devotees of interior design, we put a lot of our focus on the way our homes look. After all, it's something that we put a lot of work into. We plan every room and every area, placing furniture, adding accessories and choosing textiles. We construct meticulously thought out color stories while weaving together patterns and mixing sizes and textures. We paint, place art, create gallery walls and even throw up wallpaper. And when we're done and everything looks perfect, we scour the internet looking for inspirational images that will give us new ideas on how to do it all over again. There's no question, how our homes look means a lot to us. But even more important than how they look is how our homes feel. To create the right feel at home we have to do more than just put together well-designed spaces that look good. We need to think more holistically, ensuring that the spaces that we design are as comforting to the body and relaxing to the mind as they are appealing to the eye. And believe it or not, one of the best ways to do this is to think nice and hard about what you think home smells like.
Scent is one of our most important senses. Not only is it the sense most connected to memory, it's also a powerful trigger for emotion. The right smell can put your mind at ease, lower your blood pressure and remind you of your first childhood crush all at the same time. So it's a safe bet that there are a number of smells that will make you feel right at home. And while aromatherapy candles might be a relatively recent addition to the home decorator's arsenal, the science of smell is not. After all, it's an old home stager's trick to bake cookies in a house that you're trying to sell because the smell will help potential buyer's feel more at home in the space. And now, there's any number of ways to use that same thinking in your own home.Continue to 2 of 6 below.

A Candle To Create Your Happy Place
There's any number of ways to get the smells that you want into your home. Flowers, plants, and oils are some of the most common, but who among us doesn't love a good candle - especially one with a unique fragrance that just whisks you away? The “Savoy” luxury candle from Harlem Candle Company calls to mind the roaring 20's dance hall atmosphere of the legendary Savoy Club in Harlem. And if you're not from New York, or not old enough to remember the roaring 20's, don't worry. It's the combination of Blackcurrant and mandarin along with a layer of flirtatious florals and a sensual finale of sandalwood and musk, that gives this candle the same sense of effortless cool as an evening spent touring the most notorious speakeasies and hottest jazz clubs. Sandalwood oil, in particular, is noted for its ability to create a calm, almost meditative mental state while mandarin, like most citrus fruits, has an energizing scent known to inspire joy. It's the perfect combination for washing off the mental debris of a long day. The aroma of the candle fills the room even when it is not lit and, even better, it’s stylish packaging looks great in any room, which means we can still be a little picky about what the room looks like, even when we're thinking about scents. All in all, this candle is a good mood just waiting to happen.Continue to 3 of 6 below.

Have you ever wondered why we so often see lavender used in laundry detergents? It’s because the scent of lavender has been scientifically proven to be an effective tool for helping to reduce tensions and relieve anxiety. And while that's great for your clothes, it's even better for your home, especially in the bedroom. Having the smell of lavender on your sheets is a great way to wind down from your day and can help you have an easier time drifting off to sleep. And lavender doesn't have to be just a scent. Keeping some fresh lavender blooms by your bedside can go a long way to helping you decompress while adding a little of the flower's royal color to your room. Home is about creating a space that's comfortable for both body and mind. So my spring scent suggestion for your bedding is to invest in some lavender laundry detergent.Continue to 4 of 6 below.
