Vacuums are great at collecting dirt and dust, but they don’t do much in the way of stains and grime, which is why steam cleaners like the Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop System are so popular today. Because you—like us— may be hesitant to spend $100+ on another floor-cleaning tool, we wanted to see if this steam cleaner from Shark was worth the price. To do so, we put it to work scrubbing our dirtiest floors—and we were pleasantly surprised with the results. Read on to see what we loved about this product.
Setup Process: As easy as it gets
Out of all the steam mops we’ve reviewed, the Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop System is the quickest to assemble. No tools are necessary—the handle, mop body, and head simply snap together. Even the least mechanically inclined person will have no problem getting this tool put together.
The Genius also has a superior water tank design, as it can be filled while the mop is upright by opening the tank lid. Once turned on, the Genius starts steaming after 30 seconds.
This steam mop also has a unique feature called the “Steam Blaster”—when tilting the mop head downward, it creates an additional burst of steam to loosen stubborn dirt and grime.

Performance: Powerful cleaning with “Steam Blaster” functionality
Using the Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop System is pretty straightforward. There are three basic settings—low, medium, and high—that you can choose from depending on the floor type and how dirty the surface is. In our testing, the medium and high settings were the most effective. When using the high setting, we were amazed at how much dirt was pulled off of what looked like a clean floor.
This steam mop also has a unique feature called the “Steam Blaster”—when tilting the mop head downward, it creates an additional burst of steam to loosen stubborn dirt and grime. This feature is super effective in high-traffic areas—like mudrooms and foyers—but also on targeted messes that are dried on. For instance, the Genius was able to remove a thick coffee stain that our other steam mops couldn’t.
The mop head is double-sided, giving you twice the cleaning surface, and it’s also easier to steer than other steam mops, making it a breeze to clean under or around furniture.
When we finished mopping, it was easy to release the cleaning pad as all you have to do is press a button on the side of the mop. This is a welcome feature, as no one wants to touch a damp, dirty pad. Once detached, the cleaning pads are machine washable, and we found they held up well after going through a washer and dryer cycle. While removal is easy, the one problem we had with the cleaning pad was attaching it to the mop—it’s a little tricky to lock into place.

Design: Small details make it a joy to use
The Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop stands at a comfortable height, which saves your back from having to constantly bend over while cleaning. It’s also lightweight, so maneuverability isn’t a challenge. The mop is dark gray and burgundy, hiding dirt and dings, and it comes with an additional triangle dirt grip head and pad (both washable), which are useful for cleaning corners. The cord is slightly over 22 feet, saving you from having to move between power outlets when cleaning a large room. The mop head is double-sided, giving you twice the cleaning surface and it’s also easier to steer than other steam mops, making it a breeze to clean under or around furniture.
Remember when we mentioned how easy it is to assemble the Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop System? It’s just as easy to disassemble, and you can store it without the mop head attached. This makes storage much easier if you have limited closet space, and as for the long power cord, there are tabs on the back of the mop that allow you to coil it up when not in use.
Price: Expensive, but worth it
There might be cheaper products out there, but a steam mop as powerful as the Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop System is a bargain at its sub-$150 price. This heavy-duty, professional-grade cleaning tool is a worthwhile investment for households with pets and/or children as it cuts through tough messes without a hitch.
The one problem we had with the cleaning pad was attaching it to the mop—it’s a little tricky to lock into place.
Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop System vs. Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop
When compared to the similar Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop, we would still recommend the Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop System. Though it’s slightly higher priced, the addition of “Steam Blaster” functionality makes it a much more powerful tool. For active households, it’s harder to find a better model than the Genius which easily takes care of kitchen spills and high-traffic areas.
