It seems that in 2022, it will be very easy to be green. Beloved paint brand Sherwin-Williams is the latest leader in color trends to announce its prediction for the Color of the Year 2022: Evergreen Fog, a subtle green shade that leans heavily into nostalgia and pairs perfectly with natural materials. With the unstoppable rise in popularity of plant parenting and houseplants, it's no surprise that green is on everyone's minds—and, fortunately for plant-lovers everywhere, this soft green color is the perfect backdrop for your indoor jungle.
Nourishing, Sophisticated, and Nostalgic
Referred to as “a nourishing and sophisticated gray-green,” the brand hopes that Evergreen Fog will “usher in a new era of nostalgic mid-tones." While selections of the Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year in previous years have covered cool neutrals and bold jewels tones, for 2022, the company is looking forward to the sophistication of their pick.
“Evergreen Fog is a sophisticated wash of color for spaces that crave a subtle yet stunning statement shade,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Evergreen Fog inspires us to begin again and is a great choice for modern interiors and exteriors.”
A Smooth and Subtle Shade That's Perfect Everywhere
Because the shade is smooth and subtle, Sherwin-Williams assures fans that it’s perfect for every part of the home—indoors and out.
“The familiar, comfortable nature of Evergreen Fog shines as a reassuring backdrop and freshens up any space,” Wadden says. “Create depth and texture with a mix of natural-looking textiles. Add a little gleam with a fusion of metals—champagne gold, warm brass, or inky black.”
Forecasting a Year of Creativity and Discovery
Along with Evergreen Fog, Sherwin-Williams also assembled a 2022 Colormix Forecast, “which embraces creativity, intention, and discovery.” Other shades within the forecast that pair well with Evergreen Fog include Shoji White, Woven Wicker, Bakelite Gold, and Sherwin-Williams’s 2021 Color of the Year, Urban Bronze.
Nature-inspired paint colors are taking the Color of the Year announcements by storm. With nearly everyone reassessing their interior paint colors, the rise of maximalism, and a shift away from all-white interiors, distinctive (but not too bold) paint colors are allowing people to express their creativity inside (and outside) their spaces without committing to difficult-to-match shades.
Sherwin-Williams isn't the only color trend predictor to go with a delightfully muted green this year—the PPG Color of the Year 2022, Olive Sprig, is also a toned-down, restorative color that's meant to soothe and encourage growth all at once. Behr, another top paint company, furthers the inspired-by-nature trend with its tranquil Breezeway tone. And while other trend predictors have yet to announce their picks for 2022, it's safe to expect more natural, organic tones.
