Looking back, one of the first cooking skills I acquired was how to make an omelette and this recipe for kids is so easy, they will be wanting to make their own version in no time. It really isn't hard to make an exceptionally good omelet with simple ingredients — the actual trick lies in making sure you use the right pan (non-stick or cast iron) and heat it to just the right temperature.
Omelette Recipe for Kids: Tips for a Perfect Breakfast
This omelette recipe is simple, calling only for cheese. But you can certainly get creative, adding any variety of meats, vegetables and cheeses your kids already like to make the omelette to their tastes.
If your kids are interested in taking part, allow them to break the eggs and whisk with water (or you can substitute the water with 1 tablespoon of milk for a creamier, fluffier texture), salt and pepper. While they do that, show them how to preheat the skillet over medium heat in order for the omelette to cook evenly.
Always keep your spatula clean while you are flipping, as a messy spatula can mean your omelette may stick to the skillet. Don't be afraid to let the kids try flipping one side of the omelette over the other —trying is the only way they will learn to do it well.
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon water
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Cooking spray (or butter)
- Spray a 10- or 12-inch non-stick or cast iron skillet with a thin coating of cooking spray (or drop1/2 teaspoon of butter into the skillet and spread around), and heat over medium heat.
- Beat eggs, water, salt and pepper until light and fluffy.
- When skillet is hot (but not smoking), pour the egg mixture in.
- As the omelette starts to set, lift an edge of the omelette with a clean spatula and tilt the pan so that the runny, unset portion of the omelette can run underneath and start to set. Repeat on the opposite side. If adding vegetables or meats, do so now.
- When the omelette is just about completely set, sprinkle the cheese over half of the omelette. Then fold the other half of the omelette over the cheese half.
- Slide onto a plate, and serve immediately.
This simple recipe is delicious paired with just ketchup. If your kids are more adventurous, try adding a side of a particular cooked vegetable each time you make this recipe and see how they react. Next time try adding that vegetable to the inside of their omelette if they seem to like the pairing.
