Use a fresh (not corned) beef brisket in this dish. The onion soup mix and spices give the sauce fabulous flavor.
Serve this flavorful beef brisket with mashed potatoes, corn, biscuits, and coleslaw for a fabulous family meal.
Trim any excess fat from the beef. Place the brisket in slow cooker; cutting it to fit if necessary.
In a small bowl combine the water, ketchup, onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, spices, garlic and pepper; pour over the meat in the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours.
Remove brisket to a platter and keep warm.
Skim fat from juices* and transfer to a saucepan. Bring to a simmer and then stir in flour-water paste.
Cook on low, stirring, until thickened.
Serve the brisket sliced with the thickened sauce.
*Because of the condensation over long, slow cooking, you might find the broth left behind is watery. Before thickening, boil the liquids for a few minutes until reduced the flavors are more concentrated.
Add fresh sliced onions to the slow cooker before adding the beef.
For more depth of flavor, consider searing the beef in a little olive oil before putting it in the slow cooker.
