When cold weather arrives, we think of pot roasts, hearty chilis, and warming stews. These stew recipes are all cooked in the slow cooker. Many are very easy, and the slow cooker makes them convenient.
Most stews are versatile, so if you aren't a fan of a particular vegetable in a stew, feel free to substitute another vegetable or omit it altogether. Add some barley to a beef or pork stew to make it heartier.
Farro is an excellent grain to add to a soup or stew instead of rice. It stays firm and nutty. Tomato paste is another addition that can add a bit more flavor to a stew, and it thickens slightly as well. Or add a small amount of beer or wine to jazz up an everyday stew.
