Tux, the DIY enthusiast and home chef behind the blog Brooklyn Homemaker despised the kitchen in his rental because it was not pretty and worse, felt outdated. Painting the wall directly above his countertops solved the problem. The new chalkboard backsplash added chic contrast to his cooking space while creating a spot to jot down a grocery list.
The New York City based blogger offered a few tips for DIY chalkboard walls. To avoid chipping, let the freshly painted surface set for a few days (so no drawing). Afterward, condition your new blackboard by rubbing the entire surface with white chalk and then wiping off. Doing so creates a thin layer of chalk dust, which will make the surface easier to erase.
