Painting the wall directly above his countertops solved the problem. The new chalkboard backsplash added chic contrast to his cooking space while creating a spot to jot down a grocery list.
The New York City based blogger offered a few tips for DIY chalkboard walls. To avoid chipping, let the freshly painted surface set for a few days (so no drawing). Afterward, condition your new blackboard by rubbing the entire surface with white chalk and then wiping off. Doing so creates a thin layer of chalk dust, which will make the surface easier to erase.
