Speyburn is one of the great values in single malt scotch whisky and is an amazingly high quality spirit given its price point. Fans of Speyside whiskies will be particularly impressed with this elegant dram and if you've never tried single malt scotch whisky before, Speyburn is a great place to start. Light, fruity and relatively complex with notes of gingerbread, apricot and orange marmalade, Speyburn will make a great addition to anyone's home bar.
Bouquet on the Nose
On the nose, Speyburn offers a nice sweet and gentle bouquet with hardly a hint of the harsh alcoholic burn that characterizes many whiskies. Freshly baked gingerbread, warm scones, honey and orange marmalade dominate with nice undertones of cinnamon, hazelnut and peaches evident. There is a definite grain character to the bouquet, one that is both balanced and complementary to the other aromas emerging from the glass.
Body and Palate
Speyburn is a light bodied whisky, nimble across the tongue and offers a mouthwatering display of tantalizing flavors on the palate. Initially, Speyburn comes onto the palate with soft, smooth notes of vanilla, ginger, and caramel before some nice spice and oak notes begin to appear. Grilled peach, apricot preserves and shortbread flavors appear, balanced with hazelnut and almond notes. It is important to note that Speyburn is a sweet and subtle whisky, its delightful flavors won't overwhelm the palate and it would be a great choice for a pre-dinner dram.
Finish on the Palate
On the finish, Speyburn develops a more pronounced spiciness with ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg tones predominating and subtle undertones of roasted nuts, oak and tobacco present.
On the whole, Speyburn is a delightful whisky and one that is sure to please both entry level whisky drinkers as well as whisky enthusiasts.
A sure winner and a solid addition to your liquor cabinet.
