How to Make a Tie-Dyed T-Shirt With a Spiral Design
Follow along with the steps in this tutorial and learn how to make a tie-dyed t-shirt by rolling your t-shirt into a spiral You can use vat dyeing techniques to make this t-shirt or spray the dye right onto the shirt.
- Age Guideline: 6 Years and Up

The first thing you should do is gather together the supplies you need. Choose your dye (I used RIT powder) and the basic items that will be needed to use it. You will also need a clean t-shirt and some rubber bands.Continue to 2 of 8 below.

Twist Your T-Shirt to Make the Spiral Design
Start out by lying your shirt flat on your work surface. Using your fingers, carefully pinch the center of your shirt. Slowly start twisting your t-shirt so it ends up being a spiral.Continue to 3 of 8 below.

How to Tie Your T-Shirt in a Spiral ShapeCarefully wrap a couple rubber bands tightly around the outside of your t-shirt spiral. This will help it hold it's shape while you are drying it.Continue to 4 of 8 below.

Dyeing Your T-Shirt
Once tied, your t-shirt is ready to dye. I used a scarlet RIT powder dye to make this shirt. Follow the instructions on the package to dye your shirt. You can also consult these general dyeing directions.

Gathering The Supplies to Make Your Tie-Dye Spiral T-Shirt
Before you start any project it is easiest to gather together all of the supplies. For this project you will need:
- Plain, White T-Shirt
- Rubber Bands
You will also need fabric dye. There are several varieties available from a very inexpensive RIT Powder to more expensive professional quality dies. Our first choice is usually RIT Powder as it is easy to find even at grocery stores.
