This sugar-glazed walnuts recipe produces a sweet, crunchy and irresistible treat. Sugar-glazed walnuts are great on salads, as an oatmeal or granola cereal addition or just as a sweet snack. Make them part of a party buffet, presented in a big glass jar so the nuts add to the visual display. They also can be packaged and used as an edible gourmet gift during the winter holidays.
Glazed walnuts are a partially nutritious snack since the nuts contain healthy fats; one-fourth cup contains 17 grams, most of it unsaturated. But glazed walnuts also are loaded up with sugar, and one-fourth cup contains about 10 grams of carbohydrates. Because of their high fat content and added sugar, they pack on about 200 calories per one-fourth cup. Portion control is a must.
- 2 pounds walnut halves
- 1 egg white
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Preheat the oven to 300 F.
- Combine the walnuts, egg white, brown sugar, salt, and cayenne pepper in a mixing bowl and toss with a spoon until the sugar blends and all the walnuts are well coated.
- Using a slotted spoon, so that the excess sugar glaze drips through, transfer the walnuts to a lined baking sheet, either foil, parchment or a silicon baking mat.
- Bake for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- The glaze will set-up as the walnuts cool.
- Store in airtight containers.
