These are some genuinely flavorful burgers. These beef burgers get a southwestern kick with some taco seasoning and all the fixings without the added mess of dealing with taco shells.

What You'll Need

  • 1 pound/450 g ground beef
  • 1/2 cup/120 mL black beans, rinsed and lightly mashed
  • 1/3 cup/180 mL red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons/45 mL chunky salsa
  • 3 tablespoons/45 mL dry taco seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon/5 mL cayenne pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 1/2 cups/360 mL shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup/240 mL cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 large tomato, slices
  • 1/2 cup/120 mL guacamole
  • Salsa, optional

How to Make It

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, 3 tablespoons salsa, black beans, chopped red onion, garlic, taco seasoning, and cayenne pepper. Divide meat mixture into fourths and form four equal sized patties that are roughly, 1 1/2 inches thick.

Preheat grill (charcoal or gas) for medium heat. Place patties on grill rack directly over the heat. Cook for 5-7 minutes on one side and flip burgers and cook for another 5 minutes, or until internal temperature of patties reaches 165 degrees F.

Right before burgers have finished cooking, place shredded cheese on top of burger patties and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. Once the cheese has melted, place patties onto hamburger buns and top with guacamole, salsa, lettuce and tomato slices.
