TaoTronics Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier
We purchased the TaoTronics Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier so our expert reviewer could put it to the test in her home. Keep reading for our full product review.
Dry air can cause more than just discomfort and health issues—it can even damage belongings like furniture and plants. Luckily, a humidifier can help level out your home’s moisture. There are a couple of considerations to make before purchasing one, of course. Depending on the importance you place on things like the look and sound of a humidifier, there are a variety of devices to choose from. We tested the TaoTronics Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier to see how well it could improve our home’s air quality. Below, everything we observed during our week of use—from its unobtrusive presence to its silent operation.
Setup Process: Straightforward and easy
Getting the Taotronics humidifier up and running is quite simple. After unboxing it, we just removed the nozzle from the tank and lifted the tank from the base. Once flipped over, the bottom of the base revealed a filter. This screwed off easily, allowing us to fill the tank with water. Once it was full, we screwed the filter back on and popped the tank back on the base. From there, we plugged the humidifier in and turned the dial to the ‘on’ setting. It quickly lit up green when it was ready to start releasing mist.

Design: Clunky but smooth controls
With a blue and white plastic design that includes a 3.5-liter water tank, the TaoTronics humidifier doesn’t try to hide what it is with any design flourishes. That said, the gadget isn’t a total eyesore, either. Really, it just resembles something you’d find in a kitchen—like a Brita water pitcher. If you’re using the humidifier in your bedroom, as we did, guests likely won’t see it anyways.
The machine is whisper-quiet. If you’re placing it in a baby’s room or you’re just a particularly light sleeper, you won’t have to worry about it disturbing slumber.
Other facets of the design include a dial which allows you to customize how much moisture you want to add to your room and twin nozzles which swivel smoothly to help you target mist to specific spots. These two features are very intuitive and easy to figure out without needing a second glance at the manual. A five-foot power cord gives you little leeway in terms of where you want to plug it in, so if you’re placing it on top of a tall dresser or bookshelf, you may need to run an extension cord.
Performance: Cool, targeted mist
This humidifier is effective at infusing dry air with moisture, and we found that it truly does last 10 hours with a full tank. As we previously mentioned, the nozzle head can be split so you can direct mist in two directions rather than just one or directly up. This means you can make the mist coverage more universal if you want to humidify a larger space (up to 322 feet), or you can target two specific areas. If you have a plant in the corner of the room, for example, and you want to moisturize the air to create a more optimal environment for it to thrive, you can direct the nozzle directly toward it. If you’re on the opposite side of the room, you can also simultaneously point the mist toward where you’re sitting, so you don’t have to choose just one dry area to prioritize.
The humidifier also offers a built-in filter to sanitize the water and a light at the bottom of the water tank which turns green to indicate when the device is on and functioning properly. If the light is red, the humidifier is informing you that there is either too much or too little water in the tank and the level should be adjusted before the machine will start operating. We appreciated that the device is programmed to automatically turn off when the water level gets low, so we didn’t have to worry about the machine running on empty overnight.
Lastly, the machine is whisper-quiet. If you’re placing it in a baby’s room or you’re just a particularly light sleeper, you won’t have to worry about it disturbing slumber.

Cleaning: Nooks and crannies are hard to reach
Fewer parts may translate to easier setup, but because this humidifier’s water tank doesn’t come apart or offer a wide opening, it can be hard to manually clean and dry—even with the included brush. To clean the unit, you have to remove the tank from the base and rinse. It’s important to do this every week or so in order to avoid mold. If you really can’t get your hand in there, we also found that cleaning with white vinegar helped. Simply add a teaspoon of vinegar to the tank, fill with water, replace the cap, shake it, and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing. The manual doesn’t mention anything about being dishwasher safe—so make sure you clean it by hand only.
This humidifier is effective at infusing dry air with moisture, and we found that it truly does last 10 hours with a full tank.
While ease of cleaning does leave something to be desired, keep in mind this is a common complaint for nearly every humidifier on the market. So, if the Taotronic humidifier checks off all your other boxes, it’s very much still worth considering.
Price: Hard to beat
For an effective humidifier with customizable settings, TaoTronics’ roughly $30 price tag is hard to beat. The twin 360-degree nozzles are a unique design feature that allow you to accurately humidify in two directions at once, and the vapor emits so quietly that users who get distracted easily by noise won’t even notice it’s in the room.

Competition: It’s out there, but not any better
Though TaoTronics’ humidifier may not be as cute as some teardrop-shaped competitors, like the comparably-priced three-liter Geniani Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, it does have topnotch performance on its side. The model truly is whisper quiet, making it ideal for babies and light sleepers, and its design is quite intuitive. The run time of up to 10 hours is a tad short, with the Geniani device lasting up to 12 hours, but if you plan to run the humidifier while you sleep and don’t mind refilling each day, then that alone shouldn’t stop you from choosing TaoTronics’ unit.

Aside from cleaning issues (which are pretty universal), it’s hard to beat.
It’s not the prettiest humidifier on the market, but its strengths in quality and ease-of-use may outweigh any aesthetic concerns you have. Plus, it’s only $30, so you don’t have much to lose.
