Traditional Texas BBQ Sauce is a sweet and spicy mixture of tomato, spices and vegetables. Somewhat old fashioned when compared to popular sauces of today this sauce takes a little more time but is definitely worth the effort with its rich flavor. This is perfect paired with sliced brisket or on brisket sandwiches.

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup/240 mL water
  • 1 cup/240 mL ketchup
  • 1/2 cup/120 mL cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup/60 mL butter
  • 1/4 cup/60 mL minced onion
  • 3 stocks celery, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons/45 mL Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons/30 mL spicy mustard
  • 2 tablespoons/30 mL honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 beef bullion cube
  • 1 tablespoon/15 mL paprika
  • 2 teaspoons/10 mL chili powder
  • salt and pepper to taste

How to Make It

1. Melt butter in a medium saucepan. Add onion, and celery. Cook over medium-low heat for 4-5 minutes until soft.  Add garlic and cook for 15-20 seconds.  No longer than that. Add water and boullion cube. Stir until bullion is dissolved. Add remaining ingredients, stir and simmer on low for about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally.

2. Remove sauce from heat and allow to cool for 15 minutes. Pour into a blender and blend until smooth (about 15-20 seconds).

Use sauce immediately or store in an air tight container in refrigerator for up to 7 days after preparation.  Warm slightly before using.
