Best Overall: Saatva Latex Pillow

4.8
Saatva Pillow

Sizes: Queen, King | Fill Material: Shredded latex and microdenier fiber | Cover Material: 100% organic cotton | Care: Cover and fiber insert are machine washable | Certifications: None listed

What We Like
  • Ideal balance of support and comfort

  • Extremely well-made

  • Slightly oversized

  • 45-day sleep trial

What We Don't Like
  • Too thick for stomach sleepers

  • Expensive

After extensive testing, the Saatva Latex Pillow stood out as one of our all-around favorites. This pillow has a shredded latex core that’s surrounded by a plush microdenier fiber, all wrapped in an organic cotton cover, and it offers the perfect combination of support and comfort for multiple sleeping positions. Our testers loved the way this pillow cradles your head without being too squishy, and its slightly oversized form makes it feel luxurious on your bed.

This pillow also stands out thanks to its superior materials and construction. The shredded latex is hypoallergenic and doesn’t experience any off-gassing like foam, and the organic cotton shell has gusseted sides with elegant piping details that help the pillow keep its shape. The outer cover and fiber portion of the pillow can be machine-washed and dried, and we found that the pillow stayed at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

The only downsides of the Saatva Latex Pillow are its height, which may make it uncomfortable for stomach sleepers, and its high price tag. However, we think it’s worth the splurge for a luxurious and comfortable night of sleep.

Best Budget: Rest Haven Shredded Memory Foam Bed Pillow Set of 2

Rest Haven Shredded Memory Foam Bed Pillow Set of 2

Sizes: Standard, Queen, King | Fill Material: Shredded memory foam | Cover Material: 100% polyester | Care: Machine washable | Certifications: CertiPUR-US

What We Like
  • Pack of two

  • Plush and fluffy

  • Molds to head nicely

  • 3-year warranty

What We Don't Like
  • Extremely small

  • Requires regular fluffing

The Rest Haven Shredded Memory Foam Bed Pillows come in a pack of two for a reasonable price, and we think they’re a great budget-friendly alternative to more expensive shredded memory foam pillows. These pillows come vacuum sealed and need to be put in the dryer for several minutes before they’ll fluff up to their full height, but after that, we found them to be plush and comfortable, molding to your head nicely throughout the night.

These pillows come in standard, queen, and king sizes, but we did notice that the standard size pillows are significantly smaller than your average pillow. They’re filled with CertiPUR-US shredded memory foam and wrapped in a polyester cover, and they can be machine-washed for easy maintenance. However, our testers did note that the pillows get packed down fairly easily, so they require regular fluffing to maintain their loft.

What We Like
  • Good balance of support and comfort

  • Extra fill included

  • Numerous safety certifications

  • 5-year warranty

What We Don't Like
  • Nothing we could find

If you often find pillows to be too thick or too thin, you’ll like the Coop Premium Adjustable Pillow. It’s filled with a mixture of shredded memory foam and microfiber, which doesn’t feel lumpy under your head, and it has a side zipper that allows you to remove or add fill to suit your individual sleep preferences—it even comes with an additional ½-pound bag of fill for those who like an overstuffed pillow.

In testing, we found this pillow to be extremely comfortable yet supportive, and our testers loved the ability to adjust the pillow’s density. The materials are both CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified, and the product is backed by a five-year warranty.

What Testers Say

"When we washed the outer shell, it retained its size and shape and easily fit back onto the pillow without any shrinkage issues. The shell stayed soft and dried quickly in the dryer."—Michelle Hainer, Product Tester

Best Down: Parachute Down Pillow

4.5
Parachute Down Pillow

Sizes: Standard, King | Fill Material: 85% down, 15% down and feather fibers  | Cover Material: 100% sateen cotton shell | Care: Machine washable or dry clean | Certifications: Responsible Down Standard, OEKO-TEX

What We Like
  • Plush, yet supportive

  • Three firmness options

  • Doesn’t get packed down

  • 3-year warranty

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

The Parachute Down Pillow stood out in our testing for all the right reasons, with testers saying they’d happily buy these pillows for their own beds. Filled with 750-fill-power premium European white down, these pillows are incredibly squishy, yet the firm option was supportive enough for side sleepers. There are three firmness options to choose from, catering to different sleep positions and softness preferences, and our testers noted that the filling didn’t get packed down during the night, resulting in less everyday maintenance.

These pillows are wrapped in a smooth cotton sateen shell that’s reinforced with a double-stitched piping seam, and it can be machine-washed or dry cleaned. Because the pillow is mostly filled with down, we didn’t experience any rogue feathers poking out, and the brand packs the product with a three-year warranty (with the stipulation that you have to use a pillow protector).

"We enjoyed several good nights’ sleep with this pillow and were pleasantly surprised by how firm and supportive it is for a down pillow. We woke up feeling refreshed and free from any neck or back pain."—Tierney McAfee, Product Tester

Sizes: Standard, King | Fill Material: Polyester microfiber | Cover Material: 100% cotton | Care: Machine washable | Certifications: None listed

What We Like
  • Plush and supportive

  • Two height options

  • Versatile pillow-in-a-pillow design

  • Clump-resistant fill

What We Don't Like
  • Hard to put on pillowcase

The Original Casper Pillow has a truly unique pillow-in-a-pillow design that allows it to be used for numerous sleep positions. A supportive inner pillow is surrounded by a more plush outer shell—when used together, our testers found it offered a great balance of comfort and support for side sleepers, but we also liked that the pieces can be used individually for less height, catering to back and stomach sleepers.

This down alternative pillow is filled with a clump-resistant polyester microfiber, and you can choose between mid- or low-loft options. Its soft cotton cover is breathable and prevented the pillow from overheating in the night, and both pieces of the pillow can be machine-washed for easy maintenance. Our only real complaint is that it can be a struggle to put a pillowcase onto the Casper Pillow, as it’s a bit oversized.

What Testers Say

"We were pleasantly surprised to find that the pillow delivered a lot more loft and support than expected. The inner core of the pillow prevented our heads from sinking straight through to the mattress, while the outer fluff amped up the comfort factor."—Tierney McAfee, Product Tester

Best Organic: Avocado Green Pillow

Avocado Green Pillow - Avocado Green

 Courtesy of Avocado Green

Sizes: Standard, Queen, King | Fill Material: Organic latex and organic kapok | Cover Material: 100% organic cotton | Care: Machine washable cover | Certifications: GREENGUARD Gold, Made Safe

What We Like
  • Certified organic materials

  • Extra fill included

  • Numerous safety certifications

  • 100-night sleep trial

What We Don't Like
  • Sleeps warm

For a pillow that’s made solely using organic materials, we recommend the Avocado Green Pillow. It has an organic cotton shell stuffed with shredded organic latex and organic kapok, and the fill level is adjustable to suit your sleeping position. During testing we liked that it came with a bag of extra fill (and you can purchase additional bags from Avocado, if needed), and we found that it was comfortable to sleep on, though more firm than other adjustable pillows we tested.

In terms of safety certifications, this pillow is one of the best we tested—all its ingredients are certified organic, and the pillow is GREENGUARD Gold and Made Safe certified, as well, verifying that it doesn’t give off any harmful VOCs and is non-toxic. The brand offers a 100-night sleep trial on the pillow, and our testers noted that the adjustable design is well-suited for any sleep position. However, we did find that it sleeps a little warm.

Best Cooling: Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Dual Queen Size Pillow

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Pillow

Courtesy of Amazon

Sizes: Queen, King | Fill Material: TEMPUR-Pedic foam | Cover Material: 100% cotton | Care: Machine washable cover | Certifications: None listed

What We Like
  • Stays very cool throughout the night

  • Memory foam molds to head

  • 5-year warranty

What We Don't Like
  • Very heavy

  • Expensive

For those who like resting their head on the cool side of the pillow, we recommend the TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow, which has a gel layer on both sides of the pillow. In our testing, we found that this unique design stays extremely cool to the touch, even after you’ve been sleeping on it for hours, and the memory foam construction molds to your head nicely, providing plenty of support for your neck.

While comfortable, this pillow is extremely heavy and firm, so it’s not the best choice for those who prefer a plush pillow. Only its cover can be washed, and we noticed this protective layer is quite thin, so you’ll want to take care not to spill or otherwise damage the pillow. However, the good news is that the product comes with a five-year warranty.

Best Plush: puredown Feather and Down Pillow, Set of 2

Feather and Down Pillow

Courtesy of Amazon

Sizes: Standard, Queen, King | Fill Material: 95% feather, 5% down | Cover Material: 100% Egyptian cotton | Care: Machine washable | Certifications: OEKO-TEX, Responsible Down Standard

What We Like
  • Reasonably priced

  • Soft and plush

  • Reinforced to prevent feather loss

What We Don't Like
  • Lacks support

For those who like a soft, plush sleeping surface, the puredown Feather and Down Pillows are the perfect fit. During testing, we found these pillows to be some of the softest—your head sinks into them nicely, though they offer very little in terms of support. Plus, they come in a pack of two and are reasonably priced for a down-filled product.

These pillows are filled with 95% duck feathers and 5% duck down, so there is the chance of getting poked by quills, but we didn’t experience any feather loss during our testing. The shells of these pillows is made from luxurious Egyptian cotton, and we liked that you’re able to machine-wash the whole pillow.

Best Firm: Leesa Pillow

Leesa Pillow

 Courtesy of Leesa

Sizes: Standard, King | Fill Material: Performance foam | Cover Material: Polyester-lycra blend | Care: Machine washable cover | Certifications: None listed

What We Like
  • Firm and supportive

  • Retains its shape

  • Good temperature regulation throughout the night

What We Don't Like
  • Insert isn’t washable

If you prefer a more supportive pillow, the Leesa Premium Foam Pillow is made from a single piece of premium foam that provides ample neck support throughout the night. During testing, we found that this pillow cradles your head nicely without deflating, and it springs back into shape immediately, saving you from ever having to fluff it.

The foam insert inside this pillow has ventilation channels that ensure it doesn’t get too hot throughout the night, and our testers noted that it does a good job regulating temperature. However, keep in mind that only the cover of this pillow can be washed—the inner foam can only be spot cleaned.

Final Verdict

Of all the pillows we’ve tested, the Saatva Latex Pillow (view at Saatva) is our top choice. Its shredded latex core and fiber-filled outer shell provide the perfect level of support and comfort for multiple sleep positions, and it’s extremely well-made, providing a luxurious sleep experience. Or, if you’re fussy about the height of your pillow, we recommend the Coop Home Goods Memory Foam Pillow, which allows you to add or remove its shredded memory foam fill to perfectly suit your individual sleep preferences.

How We Tested the Pillows

For this article, our team of testers who are side, back, stomach, and all over sleepers spent over 1,500 hours sleeping on these pillows in their own beds. They then rated them across a number of categories including quality, durability, comfort, and value. We combined their testing results with our writers' and editors' own research to bring you this list.

What to Look for in a Pillow

Material

Pillows are typically made of materials like foam, down, down alternatives, gel, or polyester fill. Each has its pros and cons. For instance, memory foam pillows are great if you sleep in the same position every night, while down pillows are super fluffy. Consider whether the material you’re buying is conducive to your sleep preferences and whether it might cause any allergies to act up.

Firmness

Your firmness preference is an essential consideration when purchasing a pillow. Firm pillows offer a greater level of support for your head and neck, making them ideal for side sleepers, while plush pillows allow your head to sink in, which is often better for back or stomach sleepers. You'll want to think about whether you like your pillows firm, soft, or somewhere in between before you buy.

Sleep position

The position you sleep in can affect which pillow is best for your needs. Those who sleep on their side typically do best with a thicker pillow with a gusset or extra height, as this helps to keep the neck in proper alignment during the night. On the other hand, those who sleep on their stomachs need a soft, thin pillow to maintain their neck’s natural curve.

Standout Features

Third-party certifications

When choosing a new pillow, it's helpful to look for options that have been third-party tested for consumer safety and sustainable sourcing. For example, some foam pillows are CertiPUR-US certified to be free of heavy metals, ozone depleters, and other potentially harmful chemicals. Similarly, down products with Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification guarantee ethical animal treatment. Other third-party certifications you may encounter as you shop include STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX, GREENGUARD Gold, and Made Safe.

Breathability

Down pillows are naturally breathable, but if you prefer down alternative or foam pillows, there are a few features that will enhance breathability. If you're shopping for a foam pillow, choose one made with shredded foam for better airflow. And with all pillows, it's always a good idea to choose one with a breathable cover made from cotton or bamboo for added comfort.

Adjustable filling

If you want the option to customize your pillow's loft, look for one with adjustable filling that you can add or remove to reach your desired height. If you like a loftier pillow, choose one that comes with extra filling that's easy to add as needed.

FAQ
  • Where can you find an affordable pillow?

When it comes to pillows, you tend to get what you pay for, so a cheap pillow may not be very comfortable or durable. Look for sales, coupons, and promotional codes to shop in stores and online for affordable quality pillows.

  • What are good options for someone who needs neck support?

Choose a pillow that will cradle the head and support the curve of the neck. Foam contour pillows like the UTTU Sandwich Pillow (view on Amazon) have rounded edges that offer excellent neck support.

  • Where can you find a good plane pillow?

You can find travel pillows while searching for regular pillows. In fact, many pillow brands offer a smaller portable version so you can enjoy the pillow features while traveling. In stores, look in the pillow section. When shopping online, search for travel pillows in your desired brand.

  • Where can you find a pillow that is easy to pack?

Travel pillows are smaller and easier to pack, but sometimes you want to bring your full-sized pillow on a trip. Pillows made from memory foam are the easiest to roll up and pack in a suitcase. When researching pillows, looks for features like portability. Read reviews to see how other users traveled with the pillow.

As she selected products to feature, she considered factors such as the fill composition, size options, density options, and product certifications, as well as what sleep positions each pillow would be best suited for. While researching the best pillows, she also spoke with Dr. Peter Polos, MD, PhD, a sleep medicine specialist, for insights on the importance of pillows for quality sleep.
