Glazed cookies, glazed donuts, glazed cakes...there's not a dessert that can't benefit from a glaze. If you are on the hunt for a thick chocolate glaze recipe that retains its texture, adheres well to baked goods and is scrumptious, look no further. This glaze recipe combines simple ingredients into a decadent glaze that is sure to make anything it touches even more delicious.

A good glaze can be hard to come by in the baking world. Some are too thin, wind up soaking into the baked good or not adhering well. This one includes the perfect ingredients with a chocolatey punch to create a thick chocolate glaze that stays put and tastes great.

It requires you to create a double boiler, which gently heats the ingredients over hot-but-not-boiling water instead of subjecting them to direct heat. You can purchase a double boiler or create your own by setting a pan or bowl snugly atop of another pan. Only use a glass or metal bowl; do not use a plastic bowl or it may get destroyed from the steam.

(This is similar to how you cook a cheesecake, placing its pan into a pan of hot water — known as a hot water bath. But with a double boiler, the hot water does not touch the pan/bowl that contains ingredients. Instead, the heat generated from the hot water pan gently heats the ingredients, slowly melting them.) 

What You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon extract (vanilla or one that better suits what is being glazed)

How to Make It

  1. Create a double boiler by heating -- but not boiling -- a few inches of water in a pan. You will want to put a bowl or pan on top of that pan that contains ingredients, so make sure the pan/bowl is bigger than the pan with water. You want the top bowl/pan to rest on top of the pan with boiling water snugly so steam cannot escape. Make sure the water does not hit the bottom of the bowl or pan that contains the ingredients.
  1. Next, place all of the ingredients in a bowl or pan. Then, place that pan on the hot pan of water. Stir occasionally until the chocolate is melted and ingredients are combined. It should form a smooth glaze.
  2. Turn the heat off and let the double boiler cool. Do not try to take the hot bowl/pan off immediately, as it will be extremely hot. 
  3. Once the mixture is combined, simply drizzle it over cakes, cookies, and donuts.
