Conversation nooks are a great way to sit back, relax, and catch up with friends or family members, and we're here to help you create your own.
Not sure what exactly this type of space entails? "A conversation nook is just a small corner of your home where maybe two people can sit and chat away from a crowd, versus a conversation pit which is usually a sunken, dedicated area that seats a lot more people," explains designer Hema Persad. When setting up conversation nooks of her own, Persad follows a key strategy. "I look for a space in the home that's off to the side of the main action, so perhaps a living room corner near a window or even a corner of the dining room that's just outside the range of the dining table," she shares.
Creating a conversation nook is simple, and you just need a few go to pieces to get this space up and running. Read on for what designers say you must include in this area, and then get shopping with some of our picks!
AllModern Davina Upholstered Flip Top Bench
The foundation of your conversation nook is, of course, seating, on which people can kick back and gather. Designer Patti Wilson of Patti Wilson Design suggests opting for a piece that is not only comfortable but also is functional, such as a storage bench with drawers. Accent chairs are also essential, and you'll want to be mindful about how you position them. "Angling chairs towards each other without directly facing one another enhances the feeling of comfort, and promotes openness, allowing the conversation to flow," explains Noel Gatts of beam&bloom.
Pottery Barn Fireside Cozy Sherpa Reversible Throws
Wilson suggests placing throw pillows and blankets in your conversation nook "to make it super cozy and inviting." Be sure to set out enough of these for everyone to enjoy.
Urban Outfitters Little Glass Table Lamp
Don't skimp on lighting in your conversation nook. "Adding a beautiful focal point in your nook through lighting is a great way set the vibe," notes Trisha Isabey of Isabey Interiors. "Using an ambient light on a dimmer can create a sense of warmth and interest." Table lamps and sconces will warm up small nooks, too.
Adiva Rugs Machine Washable Area Rug
Don't forget about your flooring. "Since most of these conversation nooks are small in scale, we will want to add an area rug," Isabey says. Whether you choose a patterned piece or something more simple is entirely up to you.
SAFAVIEH Meek 3 Leg Round Coffee Table
When shopping for a coffee table, Isabey suggests keeping an eye out for a round option. "You will want to ensure all your furniture is close together, facing each other, and centered around a focal point," she says, explaining that a round coffee table will help achieve this setup.
H&M Home Wool-blend Cushion Cover
Textured pieces will make your conversation nook even more inviting. "A few cozy fabrics we love are wool, fleece, and linen," Isabey shares. Try a few throw pillow covers like these to soften up your space.
Article Tarvok Drink Table
A side table, as well as a cocktail table that you can easily maneuver around the space, make for great purchases, says Noelle Isbell of Noelle Interiors. "To ergonomically work best, the side table should be level with the arm height of the chair, and cocktail table level with the lounge chair seat height," Isbell shares.
Capri Blue Capiz Mini Jar Candle
Use fragrance to add to the ambiance of your conversation nook. Lighting a scented candle or two will make retreating to this space feel like more of a luxury.

Accessories like coasters are important to make sure that your conversation nook stays in tip top shape while allowing guests to kick back and enjoy a drink or two.

And on the note of drinks... to finish things off, consider setting up a wine fridge in your conversation fridge, Wilson suggests. Cheers to that!
