Tide has been a mainstay in laundry rooms all across America for decades. If you are used to seeing the Tide bullseye logo on an iconic orange bottle, don't think you are going color-blind when you see that same logo on a bright yellow bottle. Meet Procter & Gamble's Tide Simply Clean & Fresh.

Tide Simply Clean & Fresh was introduced by P&G in February 2014 to boost sagging corporate sales during a tough economy as a lower priced laundry detergent alternative to Tide.

The lower-priced Tide version is aimed at the value-minded shopper who usually bypasses premium brands in favor of generic or less pricey household products and laundry detergents.

Tide Simply Clean & Fresh Laundry Detergent

Tide Simply Clean & Fresh is a liquid laundry detergent that is safe for all washable fabrics and can be used in both standard and high-efficiency washers at any water temperature-cold, warm or hot. The product is biodegradable and safe to use with septic systems.

The original offering, Tide Simply Clean & Fresh, comes in two scents: Refreshing Breeze and Daybreak Fresh.  Each bottle is recyclable and contains 25 percent or more post-consumer recycled plastic.

Tide Simply Clean & Fresh Oxi is available in Refreshing Breeze. The product ingredients are virtually the same as the original formula with a boost of additional brightening ingredients.

The final version is Tide Simply Clean & Sensitive in Cool Cotton scent. The cleaning formula is the same as original Tide Simply Clean & Fresh but without any added dyes. Studies have shown that artificial dyes are the leading culprit in laundry detergent skin irritation issues.

Product Review and Laundry Recommendations

I tested original Tide Simply Clean & Fresh in a home laundry situation on our regular laundry using hot, warm, and cold water along with muslin squares that were prestained with grass, mud, ketchup and cooking oil.

For loads of lightly soiled items, the clothes came out clean and with no odors. The perfumed scent was more pronounced that regular Tide. For clothes that had stains and the stained muslin squares, the results were not as good. Traces of stains remained-especially the oil and mud stains. Even after pretreating with a bit of the Tide Simply Clean & Fresh liquid, traces of stains were still left on the clothes and squares.

Tide Simply Clean & Fresh does not contain the enzymes (none are listed in the official P&G product listing online) and quantity of stain fighters that you will find in regular Tide and does not perform nearly as well.

To save money, use it as an alternative for lightly soiled clothes to save some money. For clothes that are stained or sweaty with lots of body soil, use a premium, heavy duty detergent (Original Tide and Persil are considered heavy-duty). You'll have cleaner clothes, prevent the need to rewash clothes, and save time. It's worth the money spent.
