The Tom Collins is a refreshing gin sour that is an excellent sipper for any time of day and on any occasion. It is one of the best everyday cocktails and is a popular way to enjoy your gin in an easy, tall drink.

One of the many 'collins' drinks, the Tom Collins differs from all the rest by using gin as the base (and only) distilled spirit. The drink is otherwise transparent, so your choice of gin will make a significant difference in the taste of the finished drink. While you do not have to use the best gun in the house to make a great Tom Collins, use something that is at least mid-shelf.

There are a two common ways to make this drink. The recipe below uses simple syrup and lemon juice while the other replaces those two ingredients with the convenience of a sour mix. Either will make a good drink, particularly if you use fresh ingredients.

What You'll Need

How to Make It

  1. Pour the gin, lemon juice, and sugar syrup in a collins glass with ice cubes.
  2. Stir thoroughly.
  3. Top with club soda.
  4. Garnish with the cherry and orange or lemon slice.

More Tips on Making the Tom Collins

Today we have many choices in the gin that can be used in a Tom Collins and this drink is the perfect place to explore all of the options.

London dry gins such as Beefeater have long been the preferred style for almost every gin cocktail, though you may also enjoy this made with an older style such as Plymouth Gin or Old Tom Gin.

To add a modern flair, begin with one of the new gins like Hendrick's, Aviation, or even G'Vine.

Sometimes a mixing tin is placed on the glass and the mix is given a quick shake prior to adding the soda.

The Tom Collins and the entire collins family of drinks are very popular and should be on every bartender's list of drinks to know. The John and Tom Collins are the most popular of the bunch; try this trick to remember which gets gin and whiskey: Imagine that "Big Bad John" from the Jimmy Dean song would be a whiskey drinker, and associate the Tom Collins with Old Tom Gin.

More Collins Recipes

The recipes that are commonly called “Collins” drinks vary primarily due to the base liquor and on occasion (mostly in modern drinks) include a few extra ingredients. Think of the collins as a tall drink with sweet, sour, and a base liquor that is topped with club soda.
