Your roof is always there for you. Rain, snow, hail, tree limbs, you name it. Your roof has you covered. Literally!
So it makes sense to give it a good annual to semi-annual roof inspection and see if there are any areas that need attention and maintenance. In this tutorial I'll review some of the top articles and tutorials for roof repair and maintenance you should check out and use a a reference.

When you perform your annual inspection and walk your roof, it's important to know what to look for up there. So this tutorial describes the six main warning signs of a sick roof and will give you pointers to assist your inspection.
The tutorial will discuss these six roof warning signs:

Asphalt shingled roofs have been in use in the US since 1901. So chances are, you have a house that uses them! Sometimes you'll find you need to repair a single or limited number of shingles as part of an emergency repair.
In this tutorial you'll learn how to address these three problems on an emergency basis:
- Curled Asphalt Shingles
- This is pretty serious problem where the shingles curl upwards or downwards. It's also called curling, cupping, clawing and is a result of improper... installation, age or the environment surrounding the roof area.
- Cracked or Bent Shingles
- This problem is a bit easier to fix. It results from nasty weather conditions, age and just wear over time. Often it may be possible to repair these shingles and not have to replace them.
- Disintegrating or Missing Shingles
- This is the worst. If your roof shingles are disintegrating from age then plan on anew roof. A short term fix can be had if an individual shingle is missing and you have a spare or can buy one that looks similar. Also, if shingles are missing or are wind damaged, or have impact damage sich as from hail or other causes of environmental roof damage you will likely need to replace them.

When you perform your roof inspection you will be looking for areas where leaks may occur. This article drills down in content and describes where to look for leaks. For example, flashing. Flashing is the material used to stop unwanted water flow on a roof. It is used between the roof deck and any feature that changes or interrupts the roof slope. The most common reasons for roof leaks are caused by missing, improperly installed or failed flashing.
Learn what to look for when snooping for leaks... around vent stack flashing, chimneys, roof valleys, dormers and their adjoining sidewalls and the eaves of a roof.
Chimney flashing failure is often the culprit when you see water stains appear on ceilings away from exterior walls and near a chimney (such as a furnace chimney or fireplace chimney).
Plumbing stack vents that come up through a roof must be flashed with a sheet metal and rubber boot flashing. If that's not properly installed or is damaged expect leaks from the vent stack.

When you get to the point that repairs will no longer do, then a new roof is in order. Problem is, do you re-roof over an existing roof or do you perform a tear-off and take it all down to the roof deck?
That's the question this article explores. There are pros and cons to each option, but the best long term way to proceed is with a tear off.
However, if budget or other constraints do not allow a tear off, then knowing the code and practical limitations surrounding re-roofing over an existing... roof is important.
For example, you'll find the International Residential Code (IRC) is incorporated by reference in a lot of local building codes. That code, in its section numbered 2006 IRC (R907.3) provides conditions when you cannot re-roof.
One of the most common exclusions you'll run into states that you aren't allowed to add a new total roof layer to your home if it has two or more complete layers of roofing already installed.
