Curious about the many vegan turkey substitutes out there? Want some more information before you make a commitment? Here's what you need to know about Trader Joe's brand "Turkey-less Stuffed Roast".
What it is
Trader Joe's brand vegetarian and vegan turkey is marketed as a "Turkey-less Stuffed Roast with Gravy". It's a sliceable vegan turkey substitute loaf filled with a stuffing and very similar to a gardein vegan holiday loaf which, in turn, is very similar to their Savory Stuffed Turky).
The Trader Joe's brand turkey substitute is a 40-ounce roast with a stuffing inside, and it comes with plenty of vegan gravy.
So, how does it taste?
The consensus is that it's pretty good, but nothing to write home about. A little vegan butter or margarine and some seasonings spruce it right up, and you'll probably be quite pleased with it, but it likely won't be the most amazing thing you've ever eaten. That honor, in my opinion, should be reserved for this. Same with the gravy that comes with the roast - it's quite good, but nothing to write home about.
Is it vegan?
Yes, indeed, the Trader Joe's stuffed roast is 100% vegan.
Is it gluten-free?
No. This product contains wheat gluten and is definitely not gluten-free. if you're looking for a gluten-free and vegan Thanksgiving option, check out my gluten-free meat-free Thanksgiving guide.
At $9.99 for 6-8 servings, this is one of the more affordable vegetarian turkey substitutes.
