Learn how to make a beautiful Japanese origami square box with these easy origami instructions. This traditional design makes a perfect paper bowl to serve snacks or to store stationary, nicknacks, jewelry, stationery and other small items.

This origami model works best with paper that is slightly thicker than normal. Also looks best with paper that has color on both sides. Even if you use plain white printer paper, this box will look great.

You will need to use paper that is rectangular, so you...MORE could use A4 or letter paper, we will be cutting the paper to be 3 by 2, so you'll also need a ruler, pencil, calculator and something to cut the paper. Check out this paper trimmer, which we use for a lot of our projects

We will show you how we work out the size, but if you only have square paper you can fold the paper into thirds and then cut one third off.

    1. Starting white side up, measure the length of your paper along the longest edge.

Get a calculator and divide your paper by 3 so if your paper is 29.4 cm the sum would be: 29.4 ÷ 3 = 9.8 cm.

Make a light mark at the third way in from the left as shown.

    2. Fold the right edge to the mark you just made and then unfold.

3 & 4. Fold the left edge over to the crease you created in the last step.
