These are delicious turnip greens to serve along with any main dish. Don't forget the cornbread!

What You'll Need

  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1 pound turnip greens
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 red pepper flakes, optional
  • salt, to taste

How to Make It

  1. If turnip greens aren't washed and cut, wash at least 3 times in cold water. Cut out large stems and chop.
  2. Cook bacon in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat until it begins to brown; add onions and continue cooking, stirring, until onions are softened.
  3. Add the garlic, pepper, and red pepper flakes and cook for 1 minute longer.
  4. Add the greens, a little at a time, until wilted. Add the chicken broth and bring back to a boil.
  1. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 1 hour.
  2. Taste and add salt, if needed.
  3. Serve with hot sauce or vinegar and hot baked cornbread.
