We purchased the Tushy Classic Bidet Attachment so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

If you’ve ever traveled abroad, you’ve probably encountered a bidet. While not common in the United States, these toilet attachments are becoming increasingly popular in modern American bathrooms. After a trip abroad, my husband raved about them, so I jumped on the chance to try the Tushy Classic Bidet attachment on our toilet bowl. Do bidets attachments live up to the hype? Does the Tushy Classic create a “private spa oasis” as promised?

The bidet came in standard packaging and included all of the required parts and pieces. Besides the Tushy unit itself (already assembled), the kit also includes a mega adapter, a two-foot flexible steel hose, Teflon tape, non-slip rubber pads, and an extra nozzle cap.

The online instructions detailed three steps: remove the toilet seat, connect Tushy to the clean water supply, and place the seat back. The actual installation had a few more steps. If you are not an experienced plumber or a handy homeowner (I’m not), you may need some help to recognize what to unhook and when. The instruction manual includes diagrams, but because I was dealing with toilet water, I was hesitant to begin until I had someone with more experience explain the steps. The online instructions made the install seem much simpler than it was.

One of the great things about Tushy is that it is an insert that goes under your existing toilet seat, whether it is round or elongated.

The first step of the included instruction booklet is to turn off the water valve, followed by emptying the toilet tank. It’s not specified, but I needed a bucket underneath the tank to catch all of the water. I followed the instructions as written but soon had a puddle growing on my floor.

Remove the toilet seat to mount the Tushy Classic Bidet. Depending on the kind of toilet seat you have, you may need to use a screwdriver. Tushy includes instructions for removing most toilet seats. One of the great things about Tushy is its attachment fits under your existing toilet seat, whether it is round or elongated.

Connecting the water is relatively simple, although you should expect a little bit of water spillage when you disconnect the existing flexible hose. You will add the mega adapter and reattach the main flexible hose again. The Tushy hose connects to the side outlet on the mega adapter and the side of the Tushy unit. This connection feeds the clean water to the Tushy unit. It’s important not to over-tighten any of these connections. If the connections leak, use the included Teflon tape to seal it.

I reattached the bowl by just reversing the set-up steps, now with the Tushy attachment sandwiched between the bowl and the seat. The Tushy has sliding fasteners to line up with the screw holes in your toilet perfectly. The non-slip pads keep it in place. Standard toilet seat bolts are long enough to attach the Tushy and toilet seat, screwing into a nut beneath.

I tested the Tushy controls a few times before sitting on it. If you’re tempted to turn the knob all the way up on full force, don’t. The water comes out with a fair amount of pressure, leaving water spray all over the bathroom. You'll appreciate the fountain when using it to clean your tushy, but not when you've got your face looking down at the nozzle.

The controls position the nozzle front to back and adjust the water pressure. Tushy suggests beginning with low pressure. I also recommend starting with the nozzle angle as far forward as possible (the switch pushed to the rear of the toilet) and adjust from there.

There is no temperature control on this Tushy Classic Bidet, so your water will be the same temperature as your toilet tank water. In case you haven't checked the temperature (I hadn’t), it’s usually pretty chilly. The bidet experience with cold water can be quite jarring and detract from the pleasant, spa-clean feeling.

I must acknowledge Tushy’s marketing department for their included instructions (appropriately titled “How to Put This Sh*t Together”). Their step-by-step guide had me laughing through unpacking, installation, and beyond. Their website also has a lot of witty gems. While marketing does not impact their products' performance, I appreciate it when a company attempts to enhance a customer's buying experience.

The Tushy comes with a one-year limited warranty. Many parts are easy enough to replace (if needed) with parts from your local hardware store. Things that may be harder to replace or fix include the Tushy unit, its switch, and control knob. Everything else is standard plumbing parts, such as the flexible hose and connections. If the Tushy turns out to be not for you, the manufacturer offers a 60-day money-back refund. I never needed customer service, but other customers laud the company’s customer support team for installation and more.

Tushy has a few other products. They offer a bundle version that can save some money: the Tushy Classic Bidet, the Tushy stand (for tissues), and the Tushy Original Ottoman (to rest your feet while you “go”). If you plan to embrace the eco-friendly aspect of the Tushy, washable bamboo towels can replace toilet paper entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to install the Tushy Classic Bidet?

I used a screwdriver and channel locks to adjust the parts of my existing toilet set-up. These tools helped to turn off the water valve and remove the toilet seat. For the Tushy parts, the manufacturer recommends only hand-tightening all of the connections to prevent over-tightening, which can cause leaks.

How many settings does the bidet have?

The Tushy Classic Bidet has two controls: nozzle position and water pressure. It also offers a nozzle clean option. The switch at the back of the unit moves the nozzle forward and back. While sitting, turning the knob to the left cleans the nozzle and twisting to the right controls water pressure.

Do I need a special toilet to use this bidet?

The Tushy Classic Bidet connects to any standard toilet, elongated or round. This universal feature is excellent. Before getting this product, I had wrongly assumed that installing a bidet meant getting an elaborate and expensive set-up. This little unit provided the creature comforts of a bidet without a considerable time or monetary investment.

What water does the Tushy use?

The Tushy Classic Bidet uses the clean water supply that comes into the toilet tank. The mega adapter and flexible steel hose divert some water from the mainline to the Tushy unit and into the nozzle.

How much water does the Tushy use?

You will use approximately one pint of water each time you use the Tushy Classic Bidet, according to the manufacturer's specifications. This calculation is based on average usage and depends on how long you run it, so volume varies.

Does the Tushy plugin or operate via battery?

The Tushy does not use any electricity, a feature that the eco-friendly company loves to highlight. Bidets are considered an environmentally-friendly bathroom option since washing rather than wiping can eliminate toilet paper.

What are the color offerings?

The Tushy Classic is available in seven colors. White/bamboo is the most popular; it is neutral and fits a variety of decors. Other options include white/silver, white/gold, white/gunmetal, blue/bamboo, pink/white, and noir/gold. The first color refers to the actual unit itself and the second color is the knob.

How is the Tushy good for the environment?

Many happy bidet enthusiasts applaud the eco-friendly aspects of having a bidet. By washing instead of wiping, you reduce the amount of toilet paper needed and save trees. Tushy estimates 250,000 trees are saved annually by all of their users. If you use a towel or washcloth to dry off, you can eliminate your toilet paper usage.

Tushy Classic Bidet vs. the Competition

If you want a luxurious experience every time you go to the bathroom, the Tushy Spa Bidet includes a warm water control knob. Your toilet needs to be next to a sink to hook up the included nine-foot flexible hose to the warm water line. For $129, just $20 more than the Tushy Classic, the temperature control feature is worth it.

Another option similar to the Tushy Classic is the Omigo Element Bidet. This $89 bidet attachment functions similarly. It only comes in white and doesn’t have the bamboo details that make the Tushy look much fancier. If those aesthetics aren’t important to you, save a little with the Omigo.

Final Verdict

Yes, buy it.

Much less expensive than a whole bidet installation that takes up extra real estate in the bathroom, the Tushy Classic Bidet delivers the same cleaning experience in the form of a bidet attachment. You need a little more plumbing expertise than the instructions let on, but it is compatible with any toilet and worth the time and effort.
