This heart meatloaf recipe makes a fun and inexpensive Valentine's Day dinner for the kids. You can really use any meatloaf recipe for the base of this Valentine dinner recipe, but to make these heart shaped meatloaves look festive, you'll want to make the ketchup glaze.

You will need a sturdy heart cookie cutter (compare prices), ideally about 2-3 inches wide, for this Valentine meatloaf recipe.

What You'll Need

  • For the Meatloaf:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground turkey (or use 2 lbs. meatloaf mix in place of both beef and turkey)
  • 1 cup bread crumbs (seasoned)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs (lightly beaten)
  • For the Glaze:
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons mustard (dijon)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (light, firmly-packed)

How to Make It

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a jelly roll pan (compare prices) or a baking sheet that has sides with parchment paper. This isn't absolutely essential, but it makes for much easier clean-up.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, and cook another minute.
  3. Add the onion mixture to the ground meats. Add the bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, milk and beaten eggs to the meatloaf mixture. Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix well.
  1. Place a large, sturdy heart cookie cutter on the prepared pan, and fill it with the meatloaf mixture. Pat it down firmly and smooth the top, then remove the cookie cutter. Repeat with all of the remaining meatloaf mixture, leaving 1-2 inches of space between the meatloaves on the baking sheet. (Check out this Valentine meatloaf video to see the technique in action.)
  2. Mix together the ingredients for the glaze, then use a pastry brush to brush the glaze onto the heart shaped meatloaves.
  3. Bake the meatloaves for 20-30 minutes, or until an instant-read thermometer registers 160 degrees F. Important: An instant thermometer is really the only way to tell if a meatloaf is cooked properly.
Serve immediately.
