Vitruvi Stay Diffuser
We were sent the Vitruvi Stay Diffuser so our reviewer could put it to the test in her home. Keep reading for our full product review.
Essential oils have become popular for in-home use for everything from creating DIY cleaners to making the house smell good. Whether you want to chill out or feel more energized, there’s an oil to set the mood.
Scenting your space with essential oils is a cleaner, more natural option than burning candles or using plug-ins. Even though those products might contain some essential oils, they’re loaded with artificial fragrances that can contain thousands of unregulated compounds potentially harmful to your health.
With a baby on the move and a dog in my home, I prefer essential oils over candles for safety reasons, too.
I set up the Stay diffuser on an accent cabinet in my living room—the part of the house I spend the most time in. The room is open to my kitchen and dining rooms, so this seemed like the best spot to see if the Stay diffuser can really scent large spaces as it promises.
Setup was as easy as taking the diffuser out of the box and plugging it in. It comes with a USB-C cable and electrical outlet adapter so it can either be plugged into a standard wall outlet or connected to a laptop or other USB-compatible device—a super useful feature if you’re working from home or want to diffuse in an office space.
I could tell just from unboxing that this diffuser was high-end. Everything from the packaging materials to the smooth matte finish on the diffuser and flexible charging cord felt thoughtful, intentional, and well-made.
To get started, you need a quality oil diffuser. Vitruvi makes several high-end diffusers. With so many essential oil accessories to choose from, I wanted to see if Vitruvi’s Stay diffuser is worth its luxury price tag.
The gently curved design is sleek, sophisticated, and brought a touch of minimalistic elegance to this corner of my home. The Stay is the largest and most stylish diffuser I’ve owned. Measuring roughly 4-inches wide by 9-inches tall, it stood out without clashing with the rest of my decor.

I used a mason jar to fill the reservoir with filtered water to the max fill line, then added my oil drops. The instructions don’t state whether to use tap or filtered water, but I always err on the side of caution and use filtered in my diffusers.
The instructions also recommend adding 30 to 35 drops of oil, but I started with 15 to 20 drops. I’ve learned from using other diffusers that any more and the scent becomes overpowering for my personal preference.
I received a bottle of Vitruvi’s Grove essential oil with my diffuser, which is a woodsy blend of fig, spruce, pine, and cedarwood. Those aren’t my favorite scent notes, but I gave it a try since it seemed fitting for the winter months.

Turning on the diffuser was as simple as pressing a single button. I started with the 6-hour setting. The instruction manual is brief and doesn’t give details on how the timed settings work. I had to look up the information on their site to learn the 6-hour setting mists continuously, and the 12-hour and 18-hour settings run intermittently, cycling on and off for two and four minutes, respectively.
The 12-hour and 18-hour settings didn’t get much use in my home, since I generally only diffuse oils during daytime working hours.
The optional light setting is a nice feature that I always turned on. The light can either be steady-on or set to dim in and out that resembles the flickering of a candle. The diffuser also gave off steady, soft water trickling sounds, like a small fountain, which I found peaceful and tranquil.
The scent was noticeable as soon as the diffuser started misting. It took just about two minutes from the time I turned the diffuser on to when the scent was noticeable in the neighboring dining room—pretty impressive reach in a short amount of time.
The aroma of the oil I received from Vitruvi wasn’t my favorite, so I cleaned out the diffuser and switched to other oils from my collection. Vanilla and peppermint oils added to the icy, yet cozy, mood of a recent snow day. Orange and lemon oils helped boost my spirits and energy during dark wintry days.

The diffuser automatically turned off when the time was up or the water ran out—whichever came first. Unlike other diffusers I have, I appreciated not having to remember to go back to turn it off.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this diffuser worth the money?
Let’s face it, the Stay diffuser is expensive. It’s designed with ultrasonic technology, which means it runs on vibrations instead of heat which could damage some compounds in the oils.
If you diffuse oils daily and want to scent a larger space, like an open living area, Stay is probably worth the splurge.
If you only occasionally use essential oils or are new to diffusing and aren’t sure how often you’ll be doing it, a less expensive diffuser probably makes more sense.
What is this diffuser made from?
The body of the Vitruvi Stay diffuser is made from metal, and the water reservoir is made from BPA-free plastic.
Does this diffuser come in different colors?
The Vitruvi Stay diffuser is available in white or black. Both color options are matte.
What’s the rate of mist output?
The 6-hour setting mists continuously at a rate of 0.75 fluid ounces per hour. The 12-hour and 18-hour settings mist intermittently at rates of 0.38 fluid ounces and 0.25 fluid ounces per hour, respectively.
The diffuser creates enough mist to scent a 700-square foot space.
Does this diffuser need to be cleaned?
It’s a good idea to clean your oil diffusers between every few runs or at least once a week if you’re diffusing regularly. Oil residue can accumulate in the water reservoir and affect the different scents you’re diffusing.
The instruction manual for the Stay diffuser doesn’t include a cleaning how-to, but I found diffuser cleaning tips on the Vitruvi website.
Luckily, it’s super easy to clean. They recommend wiping the reservoir out with a damp cloth and/or diffusing it with a mixture of water and white vinegar.
Does this diffuser come with any essential oils?
The Vitruvi diffusers don’t include any essential oils to get started with, but occasionally they have a special offer for a free oil with the purchase of a diffuser.
Pro tip: Buy your essential oils from a reputable source that traces the origin of ingredients so you know you’re diffusing pure, natural ingredients instead of chemicals or fillers.
Vitruvi Stay Diffuser vs. Vitruvi Stone Diffuser
At $119, Vitruvi’s stylish Stone diffusers save you a few dollars over the Stay and are available in eight color choices.
Unlike the Stay, the Stone has two plastic caps to fit over the water reservoir—a plastic one and the ceramic cover. But it also runs on heat-free ultrasonic technology and is made from BPA-free materials.
The Stone diffuser can only be plugged into a wall outlet, lacks any light-up feature, and has two mist settings: continuous 4-hour and intermittent 8-hour. It’s a little less powerful and meant to diffuse a smaller area, about 500-square feet.
Worth it for anyone who takes their diffusing seriously.
The Vitruvi Stay Diffuser is expensive, but it’s stylish design, durable construction, and ability to scent a large area are worth the investment for serious fans of essential oils.
