Tidies dirty clothes
Makes a game of picking up
Laundry bag on the smaller size
As a mother of five kids, laundry is practically my middle name. Dirty sheets, towels, and clothes pile up faster than I can possibly keep up. So when I spotted the Wham-O Hamper Hoops, I knew I had to give it a go. A basketball game combined with a clothes hamper just might be the secret to ridding my boys’ bedroom floor of stained shirts, stray socks, and crumpled jeans. Read on to find out if this toy is a slam dunk or a miss.
Assembly: 3-point setup
This popular toy is super simple to set up. In fact, my 10-year-old did it himself in about two minutes. All that’s required is snapping a few pieces together, zippering on the hamper, and hanging the hoop over the top of a door. Then, start chucking socks, pants, shirts, and any other dirty clothing at the hoop.
Design: A winner
Wham-O Hamper Hoops is made of plastic, stainless steel, and polyester. It has a simple design—basically your standard indoor, over-the-door hoop with the addition of an attached hamper. The toy fits on most doors. Its backboard is 15 by 10 inches, the hoop and bag are 11.5 inches in diameter, and the hamper is 24 inches in length.
I like that there is the traditional net for a few inches followed by the black, red, blue, and white hamper so that the dirty clothing can be contained out of view. It’s also a plus that the hamper zippers open and shut from the bottom for easy transport into a laundry basket and over to the washer. Theoretically, we could detach the bag from the hoop and carry it to the laundry room, but that process is a pain; it’s much easier to simply let the clothes fall out from the bottom into a laundry bin.

My only gripe is I do wish the hamper were a bit bigger to hold more clothes, but I’ve got three boys using it so it fills faster than it might in a typical household.
Entertainment Value: Slam dunk
Chores made fun? What’s not to like (at least from this mom’s perspective)? But do my kids agree? Happily, they do. They already like shooting hoops (or pretty much any sport) and are thrilled to have permission (and encouragement) to play ball inside, as I’m normally reminding them not to kick soccer balls or ride skateboards in the house.

“Why didn’t you get this earlier?” asked my 10-year-old, who shares a room with his 7- and 12-year-old brothers. I wonder that myself. All three are thrilled with the addition of this toy into their room, and several weeks in, they are still getting (most) of their dirty clothes into the hoop.
Other Value: Encourages cleanliness and responsibility
With Wham-O Hamper Hoops, my boys are playing while much of their laundry magically gets in a hamper rather than littering the floor in snowdrifts. I love the fact that this product incentivizes them to pick up with the reward being playing basketball, rather than sweets or screen time.
They are also learning the importance of pitching in, keeping their room tidy, and being responsible. And they are starting to appreciate having a tidier room, which is another added bonus. This toy gets kids to be more active as well, expending energy in a productive way—both athletically and by getting chores done.
Age Range: Elementary school and up
This product is designed for ages 8 and up, but younger kids can also enjoy it. Pretty much anyone who can shoot a ball into a basket will get a kick out of attempting a free throw with dirty clothes.
My kids are doing a much better job of keeping dirty clothes off the floor since this hamper appeared in their room.
My 7-year-old has a blast tossing in his skivvies along with his older brothers, who are 10 and 12. All of them are doing a much better job of keeping dirty clothes off the floor since this hamper appeared in their room. Their 14-year-old brother, who has his own room, even likes to stop by to try it out—and has requested one for his own room.
Price: Play ball
Wham-O Hamper Hoops retails for around $20, which is a reasonable price for this item, especially considering its helpfulness in the laundry department. There are a surprising number of very similar competitors on the market, and most cost between $20 and $30, so this one is on the lower end of the range. It has an advantage over others thanks to the opaque hamper, which keeps clothes out of view, as well as relatively sturdy construction for better durability.
Wham-O Hamper Hoops Review vs. Taylor Toy Basketball Hoop Hamper
These products are very similar, combining indoor hoops with picking up laundry. Both include a basketball hoop that fits over a door with an attached hamper to hold dirty clothing. The Wham-O toy’s hamper zips open and shut, while the Taylor Toy hoop hamper is fashioned with an extra-long, 3-foot net that ties at the bottom to store laundry—about an extra foot’s worth.
Though both are comparatively priced, I prefer the Wham-O hoop’s solid hamper, which keeps dirty clothes hidden. If your priority, like mine, is getting the laundry off the floor and out of sight, the Wham-O is probably the better choice.
