You've probably been reading parenting sites and seen SAHM pop up here and there. But what does SAHM mean? Simply put: it's an acronym for a stay-at-home mom. To the person behind the SAHM title, these four letters mean so much more to her and her family.

What Does a SAHM Do?

SAHMs are often thought of as moms who just sit around all day while their kids grow up around them. However, that's simply not true.

A SAHM plays many roles, meaning there's not a single task that defines her. She actually has many different jobs she performs to keep the household running smoothly.

And while she's vital to her family, many outsiders often don't understand her importance. Others question why anyone would want to be an at-home parent and debate a SAHM's significance and contributions to society as a whole. This negativity just fuels the mommy wars for no real reason. Judging other moms has become the new national past-time .And it doesn't seem to matter if you're a stay-at-home mom or working mom, you can't be on the winning side of the game either way.

Is Being a SAHM Right for You?

The SAHM life is not for everyone. While there are many pluses of being a SAHM, there are also many downsides.

You have to know what you're getting into and you have to be prepared for a completely different world than you're probably used to if you've been climbing the corporate ladder.

A SAHM faces many struggles, including loneliness, the initial adjustment of stretching the family's one paycheck, a completely new lifestyle that you may not be used to and losing touch with friends whose goals are now different than your own.

How Can You Become a SAHM?

Now that you know what SAHM means, you may be thinking this is the life for you.

It's not as easy as walking into your job and telling your boss you quit. Becoming a SAHM means you'll be leaving your paid job behind, of course, but you'll need to prepare yourself for life as a SAHM before you make any major moves.

Not only does this mean you'll need to talk everything over with your spouse, you'll also need to take a look at your family budget. Those may just be the easy parts because you'll also need to understand how to survive the SAHM life while also asking yourself if you're cut out to be a SAHM, something you may not truly know until you've already quit your job and become a SAHM.
