Chicken stew

It is often said that the backbone of both British and Irish food is the wealth of its stews and casseroles. There are so many traditional recipes that it would be almost impossible to mention them all. However, there are some stews and casseroles which, without, no list of British or Irish stews is complete. You only have to look at these 18 Head-to -Toe Warming Winter Stews and Casseroles to see why, as there is something for everyone.

What is the Difference Between a Stew and a Casserole?

There...MORE is little difference, though a purist will say a casserole goes in the oven and a stew goes on the stove top - the oven heating the dish all around, while the stove top heats the dish from just the bottom.

Another point of difference is a casserole is the name of the pot used for cooking and slowly has become known as the cooking method as well. The two, however, are relatively interchangeable as the end result is very similar.

Below we provide a list of our 18 favorite stews and casseroles that no household is complete without during the winter months.
