A modern manufacturing marvel, woven vinyl flooring allows you to achieve a soft, textured warmth that is similar to carpet and natural materials. However it has the durability, stain resistance, and robust practicality of standard resilient materials. That makes it perfect for a variety of personal, and commercial applications including social spaces, wet humid environments, and high traffic locations.

Note: Woven vinyl flooring is sometimes referred to as “unnatural flooring.” However this is actually the brand name of a retailer based out of the UK.

Composition Of Woven Vinyl Flooring

Dimensions: This material is sold in both tile and roll form, and generally ranges from 2mm - 3mm in thickness. It’s also possible to purchase woven vinyl area rugs and floor mats for spot applications.

Surface: At it’s top woven vinyl consists of strands of resilient manufactured materials, which are interlaced in patterns to create a basket weave effect. This makes the floors’ surface soft, plush, and complex, combining waves of color with gentle textural elements that mimic the feel of carpet and natural fibers.

Core: Woven vinyl flooring strands are embedded into a high density foam body, to provide comfort and yield. The thickness of this layer will determine how soft the material feels when walked or sat upon.

This can also provide some insulation properties.

Fiberglass: Underneath the core there is a waterproof fiberglass layer that prevents liquids and moisture from penetrating down into the subfloor below.

Underlayment: Often an extra layer of padding is added beneath woven vinyl to make the floor softer, and provide additional insulation properties.

This can also help to make a space more energy efficient, or to reduce the level of ambient noise that is transmitted to the rest of the building through foot falls and drop impacts. Underlayment is generally thicker than the core backing of the material.

Radiant Heating Systems: Most woven vinyl products will be compatible with radiant below surface heating systems. Check the manufacturers instructions to confirm this before purchase.

Characteristics of Woven Vinyl Floors

Durability: While it has the soft feel of fibered carpet, woven vinyl retains the functional strength and resistance of a manufactured resilient material. These floors can withstand even high traffic environments with little show of wear and tear, and they will resist damage from all but the most forceful physical stresses.

Stain Resistant: Just like sheet and tile vinyl, these woven floors are resistant to most staining agents. They are also impervious to water penetration, and they don’t suffer adversely from humid conditions, spills, or damp mopping attempts.

Teflon Coating: In some cases an extra layer of protection will be added to the material by the manufacturer. This is often done for floors that will be installed in very trying high traffic locations, or exterior environments.

Comfort: The soft plush padding beneath these floors, combined with the complex textured patterns formed by the woven threads, create a surface that is gentle, attractive, and comfortable to sit or stand on. This allows it to be used in intimate and social spaces where you want subdued architectural elements.

Antistatic: These floors minimize the production of static electricity from foot falls. That is important for reducing power surges in spaces where large amounts of sensitive electronic or computing equipment is used.

Slip Resistant: The interlaced fiber surface of these floors naturally provides traction, which can help to prevent accidental falls even in wet water environments.

Style: The strands in a woven vinyl application can be manufactured to be any color imaginable. Most products are designed to simulate the look of rugs and carpets, and will feature two or three matched cords braided into a pattern. However some options feature very vibrant hues that can make up unique and eye catching effects.

Fade Resistance: Most woven vinyl flooring products will be fade resistant, and will not suffer from discoloration over time even when placed in direct sunlight.

Woven Vinyl Applications

Bathrooms and Kitchens: These materials are waterproof and resistant to liquid staining agents, making them perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and other wet, humid locations. This allows you to achieve the soft comfort of carpet in environments where that flooring option is generally considered a bad idea.

Bedrooms and Living Areas: The lovely textured look, and soft pliant feel of woven vinyl makes it great for a variety of social settings including bedrooms, living rooms, dens, kids rooms and play areas. It is comfortable enough to sit or lie on, and its plush inviting nature will draw people naturally into these spaces.

Finished Basements: While a finished basement can be just like any other room in the house, they often have some inherent problems with humidity and flooding that can be dangerous for many flooring options. With woven vinyl you can get the beauty needed to support the style of the space, with the durability to handle conditions if they turn negative.

High Traffic Locations: Woven vinyl is the perfect option for commercial public settings where you want to create a sense of ease and comfort without having to worry about complex maintenance or replacement issues. That makes this material well suited to hotels, movie theatres, schools, and retail locations.

Hospital and Doctors Offices: The durability and stain resistance of woven vinyl makes it easy to clean up and disinfect medical messes that may occur.

At the same time it has a soft yielding feel that will set patients at ease and cut down on ambient noise that can disturb those who are resting.

External Applications: Many woven vinyl floor products are manufactured for use in external locations. These will be frost proof, impermeable to liquids, and resistant to stains and fading discolorations.
