When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, I’ve tried a lot of things over the years. I’ve oscillated between needing complete silence and darkness, to needing the TV and a loud fan on in order to fall asleep, more times than I care to count at this point. One of my greatest aspirations in life is to be like the people who can fall asleep in mere minutes no matter where they are or what time it is, but 26 years on I’ve begun to accept it’s probably just not in the cards for me.

While I’ve technically used various forms of “white noise” to help me sleep throughout the years (a fan, the TV, listening to a podcast), I’d never actually purchased a white noise machine—or even thought about it—until my daughter was born in 2021. She may look like her dad, but the poor girl takes after me when it comes to sleeping.

Other parents out there will know that a white noise machine is one of the best purchases you can make as a new parent to help your newborns sleep. After experiencing it for myself, a white noise machine would likely be at the top of my list of essential items for a new baby. It really made that much of a difference. But what I didn’t expect is that it would help me sleep just as much as it helps our daughter!

The first white noise machine we bought was a travel-sized option designed for babies. It was alright, but it wasn’t nearly loud enough (these babies need it to be loud to be effective). Plus, it was battery-powered, and with the amount we used it, we were going through batteries quickly. After some online research and reading lots of reviews, I decided to switch things up and try out the Yogasleep Whish White Noise Sound Machine from Amazon. Let me tell you, it’s been an absolute lifesaver.

The Yogasleep Whish White Noise Sound Machine is a small, attractive white noise machine with 16 different sounds, from traditional white noise to soothing nature sounds. It's made by the same brand as a white noise machine The Spruce has tested and loved.

One of my favorite parts of this white noise machine is that it comes with volume control, and it can get quite loud if you need it to. We mostly use the white noise sound, but have tried out the other nature sounds and fan sounds as well and they are all great. This noise machine also comes with a timer function, and at under $50, the price is right too. It’s less than 5 inches in diameter and fits easily on our bedside table, plus its small size makes it perfect for traveling.

Our daughter is over a year old now and we still use this white noise machine for every nap, as well as overnight. Living in a small bungalow with a dog who loves to bark at everything going on outside the house, I honestly don’t know how we’d function without it.

Not only do we use the sound machine regularly for our daughter, but I catch myself using it for myself even if she’s not there. If I’m able to sneak away for a nap I always turn the white noise machine on. I’ve even used it for the dog (albeit on a quieter setting) for times when I know we have deliveries coming to the house or strangers coming over for a quick visit and he needs to be put away (fellow pet parents with anxious dogs will understand).

The only flaw I’ve noticed with this sound machine is that occasionally it needs to be unplugged and then plugged back in to get it working, which happens once every few weeks or so. Sometimes it occurs when the machine is already on, and I’ll need to unplug it to get it to turn off, while other times it will occur when the machine is turned off. I just chalk this up to the amount that we use it, which is constantly. It would also be an added benefit if the buttons along the top were illuminated slightly so you could see them in the dark, but for me, this hasn’t been a dealbreaker.

Overall, after more than a year of using it, I can confidently say that I am super happy with this white noise machine. As a mom with a toddler, quality sleep is more important than ever and the Yogasleep Whish White Noise Sound Machine is an absolute staple in our house now.
